Deep Chemical Peel

Deep chemical peels are most often used to treat deep wrinkles, skin laxity, and severe acne scars. This treatment results in tighter skin with fewer lines at restIn recent years, they’ve also been used to treat sun damage and advanced signs of aging. Other uses include treating yellowish eyelid bumps (xanthelasma), precancerous skin spots (actinic keratosis), damaged lip skin (actinic cheilitis), and for enhancing the shape and fullness of the lips.

Will a Chemical Peel Work for Me?

Deep chemical peels are a large undertaking and require careful preparation and recovery. They are not appropriate for patients with darker skin tones (a series of superficial peels is best for patients with darker skin).  It’s important for patients to have realistic expectations and to follow all care instructions before and after deep peeling procedures. Because healing from these peels can take 10-14 days, patients should be prepared to stay in the home for at least 7 days after the procedure.

All patients who receive deep chemical peels experience redness for 3-6 months after treatment.  This redness is a reassuring sign of new collagen formation (neocollagenesis) and is easily covered with make-up.

How Long Will My Results Last?

Unlike Botox or filler, the results of a chemical peel do not wear off in a few months. One treatment can help turn back the clock 3-5 years.  Dramatic results are first seen 10-14 days after the procedure and age reversal continues for 6 months following this peel. Proper skincare, including daily SPF and moisturizer, will help maintain results as long as possible.

What Does the Procedure Feel Like?

A numbing cream is applied before the treatment to minimize discomfort. Patients may still feel a burning sensation during the procedure. We provide cooling techniques to further reduce any heat or discomfort.

What Can I Expect in the Days After the Treatment?

For the first 3-4 days, the skin may feel hot, swollen, and tight. Many patients become so swollen during this period that they can barely open their eyes.  Following this, peeling begins, and itching may occur. These sensations are normal and indicate the peel is working. Patients who cannot accept 10-14 days of downtime should ask about a series of medium depth chemical peels instead.

How Long is the Downtime?

It is critical to keep the skin clean, hydrated, and protected from UV light throughout the healing process (10-14 days).  These procedures yield best results if performed during darker months of the year since it is critical to avoid sun exposure afterward.  If preparing for a special event, patients should schedule the peel 3-6 months in advance.

Why/How Does This Procedure Work?

As we age, collagen decreases, leading to fine lines and loss of elasticity.  A chemical peel removes the epidermal and superficial dermal layers of damaged skin, stimulating new cell turnover and collagen production.

Will I Need Multiple Treatments?

No, the results from one deep chemical peel should last for 3-5 years.

Chemical Peel vs. Facelift

A facelift tightens skin, but it does not improve texture, tone, or fine lines. A chemical peel enhances skin quality, making it smoother, firmer, and more even-toned. If considering both treatments, a chemical peel is recommended before a facelift to improve overall skin condition.

Chemical Peel vs. Fillers

Fillers restore volume loss, but they do not address fine lines, texture, or skin elasticity. Many patients find that after a chemical peel, they need less filler due to the increase in natural collagen production. If filler is still desired post-treatment, less product is typically required to achieve a balanced, youthful look.  Studies have shown that deep chemical peels also improve the appearance of fullness in patients’ lips and cheeks.

Chemical Peel vs. Anti-Aging Skincare Products

While skincare products are important for maintenance, a chemical peel provides deeper, faster, and more dramatic results. We recommend starting with a chemical peel to establish a refreshed foundation, then maintaining results with high-quality skincare. To support this, we offer a one-time 20% discount on medical-grade skincare products at the post-treatment consultation.
