Board-certified dermatologist Katherine Marchiony Hunt, MD, is a Birmingham native, academic physician, and philanthropist. Dr. Hunt’s practice is defined by compassionate, patient-centered care for individuals and families at every stage of life, from infancy through older adulthood. Her expertise spans complex medical dermatology, dermatologic surgery, and cosmetic dermatology. She places a strong emphasis on education, taking time each day to teach both her patients and residents.
Dr. Hunt earned her undergraduate degree in Management Information Systems and Computer Science from the University of Alabama. She gained national recognition as a USA Today National Academic All-Star for creating a self-sustaining peer mentoring program that measurably improved student performance and retention in computer science at Alabama.
A desire to help others guided her business career toward healthcare organizations, where she sought a more meaningful impact. In these roles, she led large-scale initiatives to improve efficiency across academic and community health systems. Despite her professional success, Dr. Hunt recognized a desire to serve people more directly and ultimately pursued a career in medicine, embracing the challenge and lifelong learning it requires.
Dr. Hunt received her medical degree from the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) School of Medicine and completed her internship and dermatology residency at UAB, where she served as Chief Resident during her final year. Her training emphasized the diagnosis and treatment of a broad range of dermatologic conditions and the care of vulnerable patient populations. Driven by her curiosity, Dr. Hunt has pursued answers to challenging dermatologic questions, resulting in multiple peer-reviewed publications.
Since 2019, Dr. Hunt has maintained clinical faculty appointments with UAB’s Department of Dermatology, Department of Family Medicine, and the University of Alabama Family Medicine Residency. She serves as the sole dermatologist for the only dedicated HIV dermatology clinic serving Alabama and Mississippi, providing longitudinal care for patients living with HIV. In this role, Dr. Hunt achieved a 100% patient satisfaction score across the entire UAB Health System in 2022.
Clinical Interests
Dr. Hunt has also held multiple leadership roles outside of her clinical practice. She served as President of the Alabama Dermatology Society (ADS) in 2023, following prior terms as Vice President and Treasurer. During her tenure, she helped secure permanent funding for two major initiatives: a $500,000 endowed professorship in pediatric dermatology and a $225,000 rural dermatology residency track, both designed to expand access to dermatologic care across the state. Following the tragic death of her mentor and friend, Dr. Hunt worked tirelessly to secure a $1,000,000 commitment from the ADS in 2025 to honor Dr. Elizabeth Jacobson’s philanthropic initiatives in public health, women in medicine, rural medical education, and mental health.
In response to a healthcare landscape increasingly dominated by volume and corporatization, Dr. Hunt founded Derma Birmingham, a dermatology practice centered on excellence and compassion. While maintaining her academic presence at UAB, she assembled a team of exceptional and caring individuals to implement her vision in a private practice setting. At Derma Birmingham, Dr. Hunt aims to raise the standards of dermatologic care and create a lasting impact on the field of dermatology through education and research. Across all settings, her clinical practice is guided by empathy and academic rigor, particularly for patients with the most challenging medical, surgical, and cosmetic concerns.
